Carly Matsumoto, Communications
Carly was born and raised on Kauai and earned a B.A. in Marketing from the University of San Diego. She has a passion for philanthropy, creative solutions and working with diverse groups of people. Prior to joining Outside the Lens, Carly was an Agribusiness Advisor with the Peace Corps in Cameroon. In her spare time Carly enjoys all things outdoors and in the water; particularly backpacking, traveling, camping, beach volleyball, running, surfing and striving to be a mermaid. |
Brooke Newman, Teacher Trainer
Brooke received her B.A., multiple subject teaching credential, and M.A. in Teaching and Learning from the University of California, San Diego. She has taught for sixteen years, and during that time collaborated with OTL for ten years with the Cameras in the Classroom program. Brooke is excited to mentor our OTL Media Educators and to empower youth across San Diego to use digital media. In her free time, Brooke enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, being outdoors, cooking and gardening. |
Faron Stalker, Peace Corps Volunteer
Faron is a Peace Corps Volunteer in coastal Colombia in the Practical English for Success program. She grew up in Laguna Beach, California and has a degree in English Literature with a minor in Spanish from the University of San Francisco. She is passionate about gender equality, health, and increasing use of technology in education on the Colombian coast, which is reflected in her Peace Corps service where she works as a director of GLOW (Girls Leading Our World), a proud member of the Public Health Committee, and as the Outside the Lens coordinator. In her free time, she reads lots of books, cooks vegetarian food, takes pictures, and jogs. |
Maya Sadagopal, Peace Corps Volunteer
Maya is a Peace Corps Community Economic Development Volunteer currently serving in the coastal Colombian department of Sucre. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota and studied Accounting and Spanish at the University of Virginia. A former public accountant with a passion for development work, Maya's primary Peace Corps project focuses on empowering youth, women, and small business owners through financial literacy and entrepreneurship education. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, running, and working with Peace Corps Colombia's technology for development (ICT4D) and GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) initiatives. |
Keva Luke, Peace Corps Volunteer
Keva is currently a Practical English for Success Peace Corps Colombia volunteer from Upstate, New York. She has a degree in Spanish with a concentration in Latin American Studies and Caribbean Studies, and two minors in Multicultural Studies and Globalization Studies. Her passion for photography arose when she movied to Spain in 2014 as a North American Language and Cultural Assistant. She loves capturing candids, portraits, newborns, and celebrations. In the municipality where she is currently serving, she has started a pride photography campaign that highlights citizens, their achievements and their identity. Her hope, as part of OTL, is to increase the visibility of OTL in municipalities of Colombia as well as share her passion for photography. |
Rosalia Mendoza Zabalza, Teacher
Rosalia was born in Cartagena, Colombia. She was selected as a host teacher for the Global Teacher Classroom program for two consecutive years in which she hosted and worked alongside a Peace Corps Volunteer. In 2015 she received "The Best Practices in Bilingualism" award from the Colombias' Ministry of Education. Rosalia was also selected to participate in the Teaching Excellence and Achievement program, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. Only 90 teachers from around the world were selected, including three teachers from Colombia. Most recently, Rosalia assisted with Outside the Lens' FOTO Colombia summer program in July 2017. Rosalia is outgoing and bubbly, enjoys traveling and loves American culture. |
Maria Paula Perez Mendoza, Volunteer Teacher
Maria Paula was born in Cartagena, Colombia. In 2014 she volunteered with Outside the Lens at their headquarters in San Diego, California and also most recently with FOTO Colombia in Cartagena. Maria Paula is studying to be an optometrist because she feels that the eyes are the lenses through which we capture the best moments in life. She is creative and passionate and enjoys volunteer work. |
Roxana Montes, Volunteer Teacher
Roxana was born in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia and is currently studying civil engineering at the University of Cartagena. She enjoys working and volunteering with her alma matter, Bertha Gedeon de Baladi, encouraging students to study and learn english. In her free time, Roxana loves spending time with her family and hanging out with friends at the beach. |
Paola Andrea Benavides Vasquez, Volunteer Teacher
Paola is a native of Cartagena, Colombia currently studying Law at the University Foundation International Colombo. In the past 4 years she has volunteered at numerous organizations, honing in on the protection of low income communities, teenage mothers, displaced populations and transitional justice. In her free time, Paola enjoys spending time with her family, reading and learning to dance. |
Silvia Olivar, Volunteer Teacher
Silvia is currently studying law at UNICOLOMBO, a small university in Colombia with a passion for the English language. On top of volunteering with Outside the Lens in their summer program, FOTO Colombia, that launched last July, Silvia has participated in various other volunteer projects in Cartagena de Indias. In her spare time Silvia enjoys all things outdoors and in the water; particularly swimming at the beach, traveling, running, taking photos of her family and reading. |
